My short story 4 Maori Boys
Takapai Tipuao Murphy the legend - objective was to promote cool to korero to tama maori
285 days ago
Ki te ao turoa, ki te ao whenua, tihei mauri ora.Ten years hard going and kicked out of kohanganui for ADHD. Too haututu, no ears, answering back and behavioural problems with a hupe te nose. Although a tutu boy Takapai Murphy had a good spirit inside. A typical young maori boy, cheeky, fun, koi but tutu. He attracted friends and was always the centre of attention. Then one day his Grandparents took him in an showed him the way. The way of Ngati Kapa. Ngati Kapa an Iwi found in the Eastern Borders of the kohatu valley. From the valley to the tops of the ice peaks of Tipuao. Nga tangata o nga maunga Tipuao. Takapai quickly took up the qualities of life, the life his grandparents and forebearers once knew, when they walked upon the lands and worked the lands. The life of pig hunting, fishing, driving tractors, horse back riding, hutt building, whakairo, te reo maori. His life changed immensely from his years in Tamaki Makaurau. Life faded away from the rat race that once enamelled his being. Although at first the transition was dull and boring for Takapai, he soon grew accustomed to his reflection off the pitter off the water, as the inanga whizz through hurriedly, the cool air from the wind that surrounds him. The hum of the birds and the sting of the bees, the essence of the dry grass and the droop of the trees. He knew every inch of the valley as if it was his blackboard. After the death of his grandparents Takapai returns to Tamaki and succeeds at Maori rugby. His first year in Auckland Maori he takes the boys to Tipuao and they train hard and beat the development World Cup English team, what a fantastic win. He is rewarded for his part in the win against the English and is drafted into the Auckland Super 16. Having settled into his new life he is still weary of his homelands and his hunger to return to Tipuao burns within. He recognises his yearning and the difficulty of his position an visualises himself in a light at home in the valley. Contented by his emotion his adventurous spirit is ignited once again, his energetic determination offers no guarantees but his remarkable plan to get the Blues to Tipuao becomes a reality. At Tipuao the squad krump, haka, korero maori and learn the ways of the old. They train hard and run the lakes, run the hills and hay bail. They collect pupu’s and run the mudflats at the Western Shores. Though tired but happy Takapai’s determination to be himself and walk and talk the way of the old was inspiring to his buddies. To connect his bros, his management and their whanau too, he taught them a whole new ball game. Super 16 quarter finals the bodies are pumped up, Takapai is the man and it is he who carries a light. He opens the night with a karakia whakamoemiti and respectfully everybody bows their heads. What a night, for the first time, Takapai see’s the final in sight. The Blues win by a penalty in the last 2 minutes of the game. The nervous feelings eroded away by a sense of yearning a mamae missing in his life… the calling of Tipuao. It’s almost like the old people calling him home. Haramai e tama, haeremai. Hoki mai ki te kainga ki te mamae, rere to raiti whakatau mai e tama, moe mai. Impatiently he returns to Tipuao. The Blues loose their final to a South African team. What was the missing ingredient. Oh where was Tipuao, the rolling winds, blowing grass, the icy peaks, could this have been a factor. Some say it may, some say it was hogwash, but how powerful to reclaim your determination through your tikanga.Takapai embraces his failure but continues to quietly focus on his role now as a Maori All Black to beat Australia, the constant promotion of his homelands is prominent yet a overwhelming teaching in his rugby life. One that close friends have grown accustomed too. The ngawha’s are full and there is laughter in the warm natural pools found at the lake of Tipuao. What joy to see the sun go down for those first time visitors to Tipuao, a splendid beauty.Takapai Murphy a Kohanga drop out with ADHD and severe behavioural problems makes the All Blacks and becomes an ambassador for maori tama. His constant promotion and supernatural being naturally graces our presence and our tv screens to encompass the world back to his homelands of Tipuao. He later scores the winning try against South Africa in the 2011 world cup and New Zealand wins the world cup, something not achieved in 25 years. His determination to reclaim back his overwhelming love of Tipuao sends light to those around him, even the Prime Minister Matariki Banks acknowledges his contribution to Rugby, and takes time out at Tipuao. The PM learned to love his own company at Tipuao so much so that the appreciation of totally knowing oneself, body mind and soul, the PM got the feeling that there was an injustice to a neighbouring people of Tipuao the Koituhoemeke, so an apology to the Misty Valley Iwi has been planned and to be announced in the coming days.Takapai is heralded a heroe once again and becomes a role model for Men against violence and is the face of the ADHD awareness programme for young maori boys.Takapai Tipuao Murphy….. A role model, a constant reminder of tikanga maori. Takapai Tipua Murphy …. The legend.

End of November and the passing of the Academic Year
They say that child violence is attributed to poverty, what a lame reason. No matter how poor you are the what is most important is what is upstairs.

Last Week at MTS - Nga Mahi Wheako
e hari ahau e tata mai mutu te ra, te wiki, te wahanga wheako i roto i te tari matauranga Te Kaea. Ae, e tika nga awangawanga, nga pouri ake kanohi heoi nga kanohi tino puku kaimahi, ara, Potaka Maipi raua ko Lynette Amoroa, nga tino mana o te ao papaho Maori. Me nga kaipapaho ara Tamati Teananga, Rahia Timutimu me taku hoa a Heeni Brown. They're all younger than me xcept mayb PM who are all up in the whare, they're not Nga Puhi but hei aha! They're all kei roto in the whare fierce and fabulous, doing it fast, doing it fabulously.
The reality is that this is a art, doing the mahi that you best enjoy sure makes the day go faster. You ddon't even realise that the seconds fade into days into night bullys (bulletins) then into weeks. But if you enjoy your mahi you don't even count the time, you don't have a watch all you know is your deadline and when lunch is that is when your tummy won't shut up from being so hungry. So man yeh that b mean as.
AND IF YOU're wandering where all the vids are and all the pictures well there are none simply because I don't have any on me and the other thing is too I don't think my mates in the whare don't like having their picture taken by a student despite the age I am and the rest, so yeah its a very private world, what you get is what you get. So I'll have to leave you with my version of the events instead, but all good, you can get the gist of what I'm saying.
What have I learnt this week. Humble as, respect mana and whakarongo. I know this much don't look 2 keen because if you all dat then 4 sure they may get their back up. If you are as good as what they think you maybe they're not quite sure how to take you because you are actually a threat to their very well being. So I'm very glad how things have worked out. People are starting to really encompass this whole student thing. At first they weren't too welcoming because oh horha u no they just student whakaaro ne way, i know and would probably feel the same way if I was the be all bees knees to papaho maori, neway I been in enough sports teams to get the gist when you're not really wanted around this whare. but being helpful and having a cheerful disposition helps them to help you and lets their guards down to oh well we better give these girls some mahi to do. This week we've been leaving later, well I have and I have started to enjoy the length of my days and really appreciate how much mahi they put into these nightly bulletins. As I've left each day the same people seem to be sitting in their same positions as I'd left them the day before just with different clothes on. I wander if they've eaten let alone seen their family, they probably don't even have family. Well who knows.
The thing that matters most though in this office is if you're seen to be putting in the mahi, being supportive but also being on the ball, it requires self sufficiency as well as all the other things that KT mentions its a good cross between sharp witted, sharp thinking, sharp writing and speaking skills. They're a tight bunch in here aye and if you are on the ball I'd say you would probably be not far off this bunch in here too, sharp 2 toungue speakers with networks, yep baby like they say or so Tamaki Makaurau Maori netball president says or Erina Wikaere says "FAke it until you Make it". Sounds like pearls of wisdom though I actually wouldn't live by that phrase myself. It to me sounds very shallow but hey if you want to do well I suppose that would be an indication to some people that you have made it. But life just doesn't happen that way. You do at some point have to put the mahi.
Appreciation today would be a significant whakaaro knowing that behind each breath is a story, a story line a pictured that has all been selected so carefully to be timed with layers of voice overs karanga tikanga powhiri and each tap puts together a small short story that tells a power and shows a powerful story. What a lovely thing to contribute to everyday. It's breathtaking, breathtaking not just the storyline the pictures but when you see it all come together you wonder how they do it. You soon start appreciating it alot more than what you hear and what you see at between 7.30pm and 8pm every night. It certainly is heaps of work, blood sweat and tears. And, probably for me more tears and hair pulling with sighs of relief. What accomplishments and what an achievement to be a apart of this awesome opportunity. I'm so humbled by the mahi of these kairipoata. They're amazing people.
Yep I like the fact that I get to talk about my favourite sports stars and I'm always amazed by the fact that some body knows some blinkin super star. I couldn't believe that PM was talking to my idol Liam Meesam and the fact they all seem to know about the celebrities and who is really gay and who is not! But hey, I'm not here for that so I don't really listen, although I do note most of the korero. I might not look like I'm listening but passively I am and I don't really care but when you start throwing around korero who has Rico Gear's number or who has so and so's number you can't help but listen. If I had Rico's number I probably wouldn't be sharing it either. So yes, keep you lil black books private because if you have someone's number is this by accident. Who knows! I wonder how celebrity columns start. And no I don't envisage having a column, I'd be no good at it anyway. Though you could probably put one of those cams up in the office at TK and could listen to some good gossip, not thaty I'm saying this has happened. The sports team have really made me feel welcome and I don't know how to say thanks to all of them. I would like to take a cake in to show them my appreciation, but I think muscle chowder would probably be the better go! yeh man that would be mean as. Well I'll think about it.
Today I worked alongside TA and she has some mean confidence, but quietly she knows where it is at aye! Really confident without it being confident but just getting the mahi done. Her experience comes through and it has taken nearly the two weeks for her to feel comfortable about letting that off to us but I'm happy as to have her help me to move things along. I haven't seen everything she does but it is so awesome to be alongside with her and I funnily think that she has a small sense of respect for me hence why she's given me some mahi in the editing suite's maybe, she was just swinging them off to AA this week and last week. I practised hard out on my korero and it would have been alright for Rahia and Heeni but LA was just thinking it be quicker for her to do it which I thought was all cool anyway. So yes it was a abit daunting because we hadn't really practised the voice eloquently executing kupu, of which I thought I was very good, but at the best of times mate it is still hard. Even when it sounds like and thinks like you're confident, you have got to be so confident and 100% squeaky! To just bowl on up and get it layered. The help and tips from LA though is so important and I know too she won't be as positive to you like that for nothing. If she thinks you're worth telling she'll help you, but if you don't help her she doesn't think you're worth her time she'll just go quiet and not even bother talking to you and looking at you, so I was really happy to be working alongside LA. For now though I think I've done enough mahi to help put Manukau MiTe on the map. Hopefully they have experienced many a positive thing in us beign their to help them out too.
yeh bro Self confidence is a powerful thing certainly knowing your strengths and knowing how to dig deep and knowing the keys to propel you forward to the next level.
"One important key to success is self-confidence. A key to self-confidence is preparation." - Arthur Ashe. I think this whakatauki pretty much sums it up for me aye. Practise makes perfect each time. This is an athletes only whakaaro is to keep soildering on, because they have everything else down pat, so it's about crossing yourt's its about dotting your i's but at the end of the day are you prepared for the options.

Summary of the week
Some points to remember are the 5 best attributes for a good kairipoata:
- Reo
- Mohiotanga
- Auaha
- Tangata Kupenga
- Kaha o te tu me te mana rangatiratanga
In saying that I also beleive that to withstand the mediocrity in the office I certainly believe that a sense of experience is certainly required to sustain the amount of power tripping that can go on. So its kinda nice 2 b sitting on the hakinakina side because I believe that it seems so much lighter and easier to cope with than the political waaka that seem to bander through without me even knowing. I don't notice it so much but I know that it is around. Luckily I can keep myself busy and outta the way thank goodness. I must watch too to see if I am out of the boxish, but who knows just becos I can hold a conversation with JW and PM don't mean jack but I'm happy despite the feeling that we're not really welcome (I'm guessing well from what I've heard).

Review of Te kaea News
Just watched Te Kaea and can't believe I've contributed 2 some mean mahi on the show tonight. The review by TT was so mean aye man I'm like bro if that wasn't 4 me u wouldn't have got that. And whats worse he didnt interview Dad which meant the amount of information he got from Ruia must have been huge. I'm just glad that I could contribute to that. man he cracked that one big time. I'm like bro that's so huge. He must of known that it was going to be huge, even Julian was having a listen when we were discussing it. I says 2 TT bro, I didn't know that. do you mind u I told him straight oh bro thats like so modern stuff aye! I'm old school so I don't know what you mean by that story but good luck. he went with it and man mean as! it was great.

Wiki Tua wha - week leading into Mahi Wheako
- Finishing current work and 2. Finishing off previously due work
I'm pleased to let you know that on both reasons I am now up to date on both. It has been an intensive week in terms of all mahi across the board. Only starting Photoshop last week and going on to further finish our childrens storybook. Very intensive, of which has been as intensive, but considering I think it has been lucky that I have been able to finish all so much around the same time altogther as well as keeping up on the Blog thing here. I think I can because I can and I suppose I find it easy. Whereas the others have other matters to contend with the likes of a social life. Hahha I don't have that problem. For me so far that has never really been a problem, I thank the lord above. Finishing my poupou pakiwaitara, me nga ripoata o te haerenga a Ihenga (our Ihenga reports relating to the full immersion report of our trip to Rotorua) was easy really, I stop to think about why I hadn't handed them in earlier. Weird. Given that I only had a few things to finish it off, I didn't hand them in till late. But the thing too was that I didn't listen properly. I didn't realise there was an item on the assignment that had changed so when it came to finishing them off to the marking schedule not only couldn't I find the marking schedule but there was a clause of the marking schedule that had been mentioned in class that I had not heard and we need not complete anymore. So omg Im thinking if I knew that I might not have panicked so much to have a section done that I didn't need to. Luckily Triani explained that to me that it had verbally been changed during class, but I had missed that instruction.
With all the goings on and the amount of work that needs to be finished there was some korero about some students getting more recognition than others and the fact that KT could'nt stop praising these students. At first I thought yep thats fair enough because I hated being singled out in front of the class. But then I thought about it a little bit more. My thoughts are this. Some students took the bull by the horns and turned the horns and whistles better than the others. So these two "selected" students who obviously made the Bull run crazy and caused a bit of a kafulfel obviously did what they were supposed 2, that is to say filled a gap in the ever wanting world of maori journalists, and performed pretty ok 4 tauira. If it was your appraisal I'm sure you would be happy about your own efforts but since the shoe is on the other foot, what does the latter mean 2u? Have a think about it doll? I'm not spelling it out 4u so u can go about and do it. What I would like to say is "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen". Simple as really like what has been said "Get hard, better yet harden up". Yes that got my goat, and if attitude is distasteful in terms of the truth, think of it in this short summary: What you get is what you reap. Some people work hard to get where they get and better yet, they loose sleep over whether they're going to make it in this industry or dither over why they can't be bothered to compete in sport, or make it to the gym or can't be bothered about what their appearance is like anymore, because this work experience thing has gone and got them up in the head seriously, it may mean alot for some people like the life depends on it, their reputation, and a fear of the economic downturn with the possibility of their salesperson dependant income earner may not even have a job in six months time. Now that is something to think about. Seriously, mountain out of molehills, if National gets in all good. If Labour gets in, 5 years before you can be considered any reparation hand out from the government. I liken that argument to some of the pathetic journalists who describe some apathetic writing on Maori and some of the political writers are absolutely boring. Who would actually blog and make a living out of which MP did what and said what so much so that every crook and cranny of a MP is on TV and utterly analysed to the point that you just wish that the elections would hurry up and be over with. Not only do we have to listen to debate boring debate I must add but the US debate as well. Some political writers should try creative writing. Because this week we tried it but I don't think I could be as creative as I wished I could. So I'm going to finish off here and hope that I can come up with some cute ideas to add to my story. I've handed in a copy but I think I might have some time to spice it up again before Hineani gets in on Monday morning. Watch this space..... MTS coming up ... we're moving on up, moving on in, nothing can stop us oh yeh..... (do u no which song I'm singing)

Wiki Tekau ma Toru Second Posting
Downloading all these videos is fun but man this blog thing is taking its toll. Sometimes the blog doesn't accept your videos so I've spent most of the night trying to download them as it is the last day to have your blog done. Plus I have other mahi to do. Anyway up to date with the blog now. Mean aye! Hope you like it, it seems like it has taken 4 eva but hei aha I am now nearly complete with all my mahi and the feeling of a good accomplishment yay!!! about time. Anyway today's learnings fun revisiting the studios of TVNZ although in a different context got to meet the the purotu version of Mr Julian Wilcox ara a.k.a. E Ta Robbie (mouthwatering) Magasiva of TangataPasifika. Then moved on up to Marae and listened to nga kauhau o te whanau Marae. Ka rawe, what a beautiful office. The kaupapa in there is so ahua pai. Love it in there. I didn't think working in at TVNZ would be me, but now that I've been in and seen the styles and the standard do you know what I think that it is almost doable. Withouth thinking and cutting of your opportunities this is the next best thing and way to go about achieving your dreams aye! this was a great day had a korero with Charles Weusten and Paora Maxwell. Love it.

Tekau Ma Rua - Kura Reo Rataka/My Diary Part 2
Woh Wednesday 2nd to last day of Kura. The Kura is taking its toll and I'm finding that at times even though it so upgrading this package, the taumahatanga is bringing me down. Why am I here again. How comes its not sinking in!! It's all about retaining the information and can you use it. I can't make sense of anything and I so want to speak English because I know my Maori is not too hot. It's like don't dear speak Maori its no where up there girlfriend. I have a deep deep fear now of performing mau patu in front of everyone like its your test to pass the wananga. Its terrifying me. I so want to go home. So I've decided to go running in the evenings all good. Me Mihaere, and Hamish but it was all good enjoyed it to the max. But have to let the stress run off you know. I wish I could have had more time to let all the matauranga sink in, I needed to go and whakatau like sit on a mountain and release sort of thing. But nonetheless, cuzzy bro Mana was all good and was a good mate to have to release my concerns too. We ended up going to the soda springs at Rotoma it was beautiful az. So cool though it almost went wrong when we ended up in Te Teko but hey all good. I didn't care I wanted to go home.
Thursday - Yay Last day of Kura
Not only is it the last day but a mixture of feelings, not looking 4wrd to our mau patu, I so can't remember a thing my brain is fried and I think I'm getting the flu. I'm freezing and coming down with the flu, but hei aha its drinks tonight. Still along time to go though til the end. Today we had Hiria. Great teacher and enlightening on her teaching, it was actually a lovely finish to the day. I enjoyed having Hiria. I did learn things new and relearned new things but anyway, it does help too if you have a Maori dictioanry, one thing that we should remember to take to a Wananga. No good translating if you havn't got this ha!

Wiki Tekau ma Tahi - Tae mai te Waa Kura REO!!!
So far so good all of it seems pretty straight forward. Its a little awkward being yourself but hei aha everyone is feeling like they are a bit uncomfortable here in the marae. The pressure begins!
Wiki Tekau – September 23, 2008 Stressful Video Time
Although staying back to do all this mahi meant a bit of sacrifice and a couple of days of forgetting to pick up my children on time, I kinda enjoyed the ride omg is that weird! Chucked my DVD @ Dave and says Dave here it is catch u later I gotta go and get ma baby b4 someone steals her! Thankfully ma Dad had the nouse 2 go and pik her up. I later had 2 face the music. But all in all it was worth it. Thursday got the opportunity to watch a few the classmates videos. Koha’s was mean. I said that should go to IAM tV cos that is what should be on TV. Ne WAY…. GUESS WHAT! It;’s Kura REO TIME!!! ITS showtime!!!!
Wiki Tua Iwa - September 22, 2008 Video Time
Got all my work done, but unfortunately it all ended up being quite a bit of work. Not because I got heaps of interviewees but the fact of the matter was to condense the amount of mahi under 10 minutes was a bit much. I did quite alot of learning here which was great got to know the software well. But was frustrating at times trying to do things I wanted in what limited time.
None theless got there in the end ha!

Koroneihana
Sitting at the koroneihana hasn’t been such a great success in planning and preparation. I can tell you this much it has been a learning lesson and with everything that you’re taught you say yes I’m going to do it, pë rä hoki engari kaore ahau e whakarongo. Didn’t check the video cam didn’t check the batteries to put stuff in my bag too busy trying to clean the house still. There is something seriously wrong with me not getting ready 4 my mahi ne ra. Not puttng stuff in my bag too get ready. The thought of giving up shit too get this one thing right aye! Anyway got my interview although I still would have loved to do more of a radio interview with people. I have 2 interviewees so far. But my lack of organization leaves a lot to be desired. I’m here sitting at the media centre at Tü rangawaewae and man there is some serious power tripping going on here, bit scary personally so I’m sitting outside. I hear the kairipoata for a Maori radio station giving her feedback on the river claim which may be settled tomorrow day. A big pick up for those in the media industry. I may have to ask a few question s and try and get the inside word. Have now moved inside the media centre, ha funny that with all the professionals in here, they all doing their work and discussing who has what and shooting the speech now soon. I’m sitting at the other end of the table from Amohaere Houkapou and Renee Kahukura and they have a translator or a scriptwriter helping them out. Funny I thought they had 2 cut and paste everything themselves. Seeing it as it happens with the radio on and listening 2 the mihi of the paepae ka rawe. The girls have joined me now and they are all sitting out on the verandah. Te korero a Te Anga start on his speech then go from there, maybe I should just make this the last. The other one needs to be done by 7pm or half past 6pm. Moko Tini is constantly working and looking after all the journalists she is a good host. I’ll be glad 2 have her represent Tainui hearty. She is a real mum and a good host too. Girls have gone and at the moment I can hear the Tongan representative speak on the paepae, you can definitely tell a Islander’s korero.
Post Koroneihana
I thought that the Koroneihana was a good trip. Although at the time my first fieldtrip it really was hard work, trying not to disturb people and remain invisible is hard work so Yeah! Hard 2 get the pix when people can't see through you. Otherwsie fully enjoyable. Can't wait to hand this aromatawai in.

Wiki Tuatoru the Iron Grip of Pressure begins
Manuhiri Kaikorero - The Media Guests I am impressed by the level and quality of speakers that Kotuku has managed to tahae into Class.. lol. I did tell him but 4got 2 mihi 2 him "unofficially" (in my impromptu "half pai" reo) in class (like Kororia's taenga). I have told him off the cuff, but I am really starting to see the professionalism of all the Maori Kaipapaho. All of them have had some significant contribution to te ao hurihuri me te ao papaho Maori. How will I foot it with the likes of them? I feel really happy about the breadth and extension that they could put into my writing and the motivation they have given me, its humbling now I write about it.
