TEACHERS HOLD KEY TO MAORI ACHIEVEMENT
A leading educational researcher says there is now little doubt that teachers hold the key to improving Maori educational achievement.
Stuart McNaughton, the director of Auckland University's Woolf Fisher Research Centre, says the success of a pilot conducted in south Auckland showed how reading levels could be boosted.
Teachers were taught how to use assessment to modify the way they approached individual students.
He says the research points the way to large scale programmes.
“Maori students we know respond to teachers who believe in them, who are capable of teaching them well, who give very good feedback and in the programme in the schools, this pint about coming to know the students well but also designing instruction that was really effective for them,” Professor McNaughton says.
Reading age improved by a year on average during the study.

Nationals Economic Relief Policy

By the looks of the package it seems that there is only a Fringe Benefit tax threshold raised from $100,000 to $500,000.00. Which can now be filed annually or quarterly. Not much there. Accrurals will also be raised (business stuff, leases, Travel advertising etc).

Do you think its true the Maori King, Tuheitia didn't go to Waitangi last year because of the political bystanding it does? Right down Nga Puhi alley. I wonder. It's interesting too, because you know with the Maori Queen you couldn't call her cowardly because she was a women and didn't need to think about the political correctness of all situations she just avoided it altogether like the plague. But, for Kingi Tuheitia, do you think it would be courageous for him to speak out. I think he wouldn't not just yet. Maybe, in his older years, but right now he ain't going to be saying zip.

Along with all the treaty settlements and extensions with the government on the treaty claims what will this Waitangi Day implement in terms of korero and how do Maori stand now, two days out from the memorial anniverssary signing? Hot weather of course, no Waitangi Day cake competitions to promote obviously, so my Nanny Tansey won't be putting her best pavlova up I Don't think, but instead, I think people will do the normal thing and expect the normal. I hope someone comes up with some better promotional material at Waitangi including Maori TV. How about all these Raggamuffiin concerts down Rotorua why can't they have them at Paihia or at Waitangi afterall thats the place 2B. Ngati Hine and Nga PUhi Runanga what is your marketing team up 2, come on shake them get some new blood in there. Hey I could do with some part time mahi! LOL.

mid week of 1st week back - Halberg Awards, Homees come bak

In a slightly twisted turn of all Kiwi's going to Ozzie I read the Pirimia is wanting those that flew our shores for greener pastures for Ozzieland can now come back and you can apply for an unemployment benefit? Wow that must be some great debate comback. That will have alot of people crying I would think. Afterall they left our economy for a so called better one and if they can't find a job there well why don't they go on their unemployent benefit?

What do you think? Quite interesting.

Not that the economy is an indication of the spirit in Manukau City at the moment but the deposition's hearing for the chinese lady that was run over last year in the shopping center, is being held today. At the time of the hand bag snatching there was a spate of robberies and killings in the Manurewa region which this incident was the start of it. See this story.

Although I am a sports person at heart I would have to comment about Mr Benji Marshalls offer to play off season rugby union in Japan for 1.3 million now I agree that he should definitely look at his options for this contract, given that its in his Aussie off season, he's not getting any younger and the money won't be there forever so by all means I think he should seriously consider it. I like the fact too that the West Tigers Club is also supporting him in all these negotiations. I mean Daniel Carter may have been the first person to negotiate with the New Zealand Ruby Union for a out of season contract with Perignon but look at Mr Carter now, (still handsome as ever... I mean) the other side of the coin is the likelihood of injury. I suppose for the sakes of both parties then that all would factor that into the negotiating equation. I think that Benji is more than capable and if not better than Mr Carter, but gee if we could only get all our beautiful sports players to play in one code now that would be a sight to see, not just the view but the pure talent. I don't know that would actually happen though, they'd look at each other and probably laugh. But if it was like a world cup now that when the majic happens well in Benji's case not sure about Danels let alone Sonny Bill.

Marshall could be Japan millionaire - report see:

Sadly the government has made adjustments to the RMA Act Hapu and iwi around the country have had bad experiences with the administration of the RMA both through councils and the inconsistencies of the Environment Court and it’s very expensive, very time consuming and although there are the so called Maori protection provisions in the RMA, it gives little or no priority to Maori interests. At the expense of the economy and the RMA it maybe a provisio until such a big nono occurs which is usually with property developments etc. Isn't it the property developments that got us into the money borrowing situation in the beginning?
In a true Nga Puhi spirit which means my way or the high way I ask you how are you celebrating the Waitangi celebrations. In fact in American style ways what are you doing not for your Waitangi celebration are you having hangi is your work place celebrating kiwi culture tomorrow?
How do you spend your Waitangi and do you think there should be more national celebrations.
I think so, even a Waitangi Day Cake competition now thats mean hahah funny!

anyway short post today better go do some work.... catch ya

Heatwaves, Million dollar tennis competitions and the start of school

Well today is the start back to school kura kaupapa for the whanau and it allows me some time to get back on to some serious blogging. What welcomes the new term are heat waves in Victori aacross the, Tasman and coming to NZ, a destiny for a new and better economy but hope with the Rugby World Cup in 2011.

For those welcoming the new education year, I'm looking at the bigger picture and trying to set up businesses now to welcome that Rugby World Cup (also spiritually to win the cup). I had the luck as well to meet Bronson from the New Zealand Kiwi's team yesterday at the Otahuhu Rugby league club, they were finally all here yesterday to meet for their world cup win some 4 months later my gosh. Benji marshall was the most popular of course, but they're up for a Halberg award awesome thats on Tuesday, for the team of the year and Kearney is up for a Coach of the year award man, he is cool. They have bragging rights for the next 4 years.

Also not forgetting my world cup mates the ladies kiwi's team. But here is new patai where did Melbournes lock Jerome Smith come from to earn the Player of the year status at the recognition dinner yesterday man that is so awesome. Ruben Wki has always been there 4 the league scene but man there are some way new guys in the squad and its like who are you?

Although another Kiwi Winston Peters won't be on the happier end today after Rodney Hide showed his face on Prime News last night with the fact that Peters returned his car 3 months after finishing his ministerial position. Hide hopes to find out if taxpayers money has been paying for his Black Ford Territory 4WD.

What about the $2 million eazy money that Serena Williams won. Man I'd have a go against her for $1million dollars. Serena blasted 12 winners in her final and did it in under 1 hour. Ezy Mill I reckon. She is so strong. She has a tonne of confidence to go with her, but I love the fact she thanked the lord in her winning speech and not afraid to talk about her Dad who has passed on and talk like he is watching her who knows if so but man in front of a world wide audience. She is still Queen of the Court and back at number for Serena.

but they've been in there for ages. On another Maori taake thats not that great is the taake about gangs. Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples says it time for Maori to come up with the answers to address gang related murders and crimes of violence, in support of his fellow Maori Party MP Te Ururoa Flavell.

The Louis Vuitton Pacific series is here in New Zealand woh where was the promotion for that one, or maybe I'm just hanging out in the wrong crowd ha? Britains Origin and Swiss alinghi hard out at each other. Alinghi got the go ahead of Oracle. Vas Vascotto is the captain of the Italian Luna Rossa, would love to be out on those yatchs... mean.

The Westpac Halberg awards are on this Tuesday on TV One so remember to watch that those are some awesome awards as well.

Welllington 7s bring it on although South Africa dominates the 7s scene at the moment. The NZ team has new youth is Julian Savea a young 18 year old. They have won 8 of the 9 series and I don't think they're world cup holders. But I have so gotta get to those Wellington 7s. Sharkey have made it to about three them so far oh well.
